Hi there. Yesterday I just planted two sarcocca hookeriana that I bought for $5.00 each at the Strathcona plant sale. Apart from planting them in full shade, which I did, is there anything else special that they like? It will be sooooo hot this week (upwards of 30+ degrees C) that I am a little concerned. Also, I am not sure how bushy they get (wide) and right now they are just tiny little things...so what is the healthiest way to prune them as they grow? I look forward to your ideas.

Used often in commercial landscaping near building entrances, including those with overhangs that exclude rain. No special care other than keeping soil from becoming excessively dry. Mulch now and keep well watered to get through establishment phase. Creeps sideways to form small tufts or patches, no pruning required.

If there ever comes a time when you feel you need to prune yours (I have alot around my foundation) and have found it necessary to cut it back from the walkway and also cut it down to be lower. No matter how far you cut it back it will come back nicely...I find it gets kind of leggy after a while and it can be a bit invasive. I usually cut it back right after it flowers. This will not be something you will have to do for quite sometime. No winter sun.
