Hello, I have been tasked with pruning two rose bushes that may not have been pruned properly at some point. One is a Chicago Peace (tea rose), and the other is a mystery, but is also tall with the same general structure, but it is bigger. The plants have tall bare multiple main stems, with the green growth in the top half. I have read you prune the top two thirds off. If I take that literally, I will be cutting all of the branches coming from the main stems, and, of course, all of the leaves, etc. Is that what I do, or do I just trim the top two thirds from the individual branches on top of the bare stems? (I have already pruned out the weak stems, dead wood, and branches crowding other branches). Thanks,
Cut both down promptly and entirely to the desired height now, before the season gets any more advanced. Otherwise you will have to wait until next February or March for radical height reduction. Chicago Peace is a Hybrid Tea.
