When is a good time to prune my lavatera kew rose? I've had it for three years, and love it, but it literally takes over the back patio! How can I control this beautiful monster?

Lavatera can be pruned hard if need be. Pruning should be done in the spring. You can find more info about the genus at this link Lavatera. Scroll down for the pruning info.

Thanks, Eric. Looks like I'll have to wait a month or so before I can tackle that baby. Thank you for the link.

All the references tell us that we should prune Lavatera in Spring. Last November 15, a heavy fall of snow nearly destroyed ours.

I've just finished lopping off several ground-hugging branches - to coerce the plant back to a more vertical conformation after last year's damage - and shortening the rest of the branches to reduce snow risk. The plant overall was reduced to a height of about one metre.

Is someone going to tell me that I've done the wrong thing? Should I prune it even lower next Spring?

    Thanks!

Yes, cut it down to stubs or short branches early next year.
