We planted the hamamelis pictured below around 7-8 years ago. It blooms very well in the late winter. Predictably, it is growing larger each year.

The tree peony, also pictured below, was planted around five years ago. (Obtained at a UBC Botanical Garden sale.) This spring was the first year it bloomed well. It's also growing large enough to start crowding out other plants.

How much can we get away with pruning each of these plants, in order to keep their size manageable and to prevent them from encroaching too much on other plants?

Your best bet might be to move the lesser plants out of the way.
