Hi...I have purchased a home that has 4 trees in its yard. I have been told they are of the dracena family and they need to be pruned for the upcoming hurricane season. Help! Is this something I can do myself or should I hire someone? Where would I start?

The idea being that they will blow over or break if you don't? Looks like they've been there for years. Year after year of hurricane seasons, and suddenly they need to be cut back? Seems doubtful.

This type of plant growth form CAN be cut back just about anywhere on the stem, if that appears to be necessary or desirable. You might want to cut some of the oldest, woodiest trunks down low just to make it look less bunchy and stemmy, anyway, apart from the alleged need to prepare for high winds.

    Ron,

Thanks for the info and yes the trees do appear to have been there for quite some time. We Floridians do make it a practice of "thinning out" trees so that the strong wind blows through them and not blow them over. Being a new home owner I dont want to have to repair my neighbors fence or car due to my tree blowing over.

You know what they say "An ounce of prevention......."
