I have just purchased a house where the bushes are severely overgrown. They are over 10 ft high and very thick. I would like to prune my side of the bush by 2-3' as it is taking up space in the backyard. Is this advisable or too severe for a bush that hasn't been pruned for years? The bush is over 5' deep (between my side and my neighbour's side). Any tips before I go forward?

Cedars are naturally large trees, and don't take well to pruning. If they are too large for your situation, remove them and replace with something smaller-growing. Check first with your local authority that removal is legal.

Likely you don't have true cedars - any chance of posting a photograph, so the plants can be identified first?
