My 12-year-old chamaecypress pilifera sawarra "Boulevard" has been sheared lightly every year to keep it in bounds, but even with that, I find it is growing a little too vigorously, and now I'd like to cut it back if I can. Will it stand a severe pruning and break from old wood? If not, how much can I safely take off? It's about 5' tall and 3" wide and I'd like to make it more narrow. The height is not a problem, but if needed, I can cut that back too, if necessary.
