I need help on a way to prune a Blue Spruce that has grown through a wooden fence and is taking over a sidewalk.

You can cut back as far as there are still plenty of live needles, but old bare portions are unlikely to sprout. So, if you don't want to create a bald area you will not be able to cut back very far. But if you only need to get it out of the fence, this may be far enough - or it may not matter if you end up with no foliage in the part that butts up against the fence.

Thank you Ron. I will try this when things dry out a bit. Is there any special time of year to do this that won't cause harm to the tree? I mean so bugs or some kind of rot doesn' t set in...
