Planted it this spring (east facing), it looked nice, one of the stems grew high and then wilted (I cut this stem back to the ground). Under- or overwatering?

Read up on Clematis Wilt. This is a frequent problem with plantings of large-flowered clematis cultivars.

I just saw something similar while researching my clematis'....they showed a walnut tree nearby, which they figured was causing the problem...any trees around that might be allelopathic?

I already dug the sick clematis out, planted a replacement and used new soil. Will watch further competition of the plants. Do not see any alternatives to applied horticulture :)
