Most of my seedlings are doing just fine, but I am having a couple of problems. All have been started under lights. One problem is with some of the marigolds (Tagetes patula). With some, the first true leaves have turned burgundy and the leaves are reaching upwards (as though imploring me for help!). They are kind of skinny too. I am guessing that I put them outside too early (under a hoop and plastic row cover)... let them stay out overnight about five days ago after some hardening off. I have since been bringing them in at night since I noticed their plight. Some of the others I didn't put out and they are fine. So would this be from cold? Nights have been down to 4 degrees C. outside (don't know what under the row cover). And when is it safe to put marigolds out here? The basil has been inside under the lights. Many of the leaves are curled under and some of them are rather mishapened. The plants are continuing to grow (currently about 8"). I think I overwatered them early on. I have looked closely for insects and seen none. I seem to recall having this happen before with basil. I appreciate any clarification. A.
I just realized that it would be helpful to include photos. The picture with two marigolds shows one that was just beautiful last night, but this morning (after night indoors - not under lights - ran out of room!) is beginning to reach upwards. Yikes! And what is easier to grow than marigolds? Thank you, A.
Marigolds and basil like heat. They shouldn't stay out overnight til low temps are close to 10 degrees C. The basil looks healthy. Looks like a couple of the leaves were torn or marred before or as they opened up.
Ah ha! It is so helpful to have a number, i.e 10 degrees. Thank you for taking the time to respond (and so quickly), Eric! A.
