I have tried this tree various times now with limited success and still problems persist this year. I put it in its current shaded spot under a willow tree and left it in the pot I bought it in, however although my others have been ok this one has struggled massively first with the new growth dying back and now the whole tree looking very dry and on its last legs. What would cause this type of damage, please?
The soil in the pot was quite wet when I took it out for a look earlier and the roots were a chestnut brown, does this mean probably rotten and is there any way to save the plant with a different soil and repot or do you think the stress would just finish it off?
Could not hurt to re-pot at this time. If you leave it soggy it will die for sure, so what do you have to lose?
I will second the advice. Remove the potting medium from the rootball and replace with well draining new stuff. I did that last year at about this time to a couple of my more finicky maples that had the soil staying too wet, and didn't seem in good shape, and they bounced back well. (And still doing well this year.)
I too, recently planted a full moon maple. It started out great but now the stunning foliage is turning red in places. Its planted on the east side of the house between us and the neighbours. could it be the bit of direct sun it gets in the morning (on the rare days lately that we've actually gotten sun in the mornings!)? thanks, Daryl
