Hi All, I am new to the forum. i so glad I found you guys. I really need help in suggesting how I can create some privacy from the 3 story building in my back yard. I have been researching Cedars, poplars and even maybe maples.

Cedars are my first choice as the will provide privacy all year round.

how fast will a Cedar grow? and do you think planting 12 footers increases the chances of them not taking?

disregard the need to get the grubs out of my lawn! lol

Cedars won't be hardy in Toronto. I'd go for a line of firs (Balsam Fir should be reliable, even with some shade) or (in less shady spots) spruces (White Spruce would be the fastest-growing).

I'll take a wild guess and suggest that the poster meant arborvitae or Eastern white-cedar or similar, as opposed to Cedrus.

    sorry, Thuja occidentalis

yes Eastern White Cedar is what have been recomeneded by my landscape guy but I have read they grow slowly and you can see from the picture I need 20 feet to provide some privacy.

Sometimes getting in something that will cover part of an unwanted view or opening provides adequate relief - there being a big difference between something and nothing. In your climate it may be pretty hard to find a narrow evergreen that shoots right up.

Liable to give problems with invasive roots, and no privacy in winter.

I am also considering building a 4 foot bunket along the entire back yard filling with the best soil and planting 12" Eastern white-cedar thus giving me 16" in height to start.

    Any thoughts?
