When people notice an insect problem on certain plants, are there measures that you take to make sure they don't jump to other plants or trees? Is that even possible? Again, just asking for future reference. Thanks!

Re: What are you growing indoors?

I had scale on some plants once or twice and used neem oil, which is an organic oil (from the neem tree). I used about a teaspoon of oil in a litre/quart of warm water with a splash of dish soap, and sprayed it on once a week for two or three weeks and the scale was gone and hasn't come back (two years later). I bought it at a local nursery.

Quarantine the infected plant and apply treatment as soon as possible, taking precaution to wash/rinse hands after handling until it has been ascertained the plant is pest-free.

Thanks for the response! So when you quarantine, you mean keeping the infected plant in a separate room or in a different part of the yard? Thanks.

Enough physical distance to make infection of other plants difficult. Greater distances would be better for more mobile pests like aphids, less so for pests like scale. Don't forget to consider the possibility of pests carrying a ride on your clothing from brush-ups against the foliage.
