Preparing Garlic Bed for Planting in October http://www.durgan.org/URL/?RLQJG 10 September 2009 Preparing Garlic Bed for Planting in October The area was contained, rototilled, two wheelbarrows of compost added and rototilled into the soil. The bed will settle for about a month then the garlic cloves will be planted, on or about the 10 of October to ovwrwinter. This bed will contain about 200 garlic gloves at 6 inch center spacing.
I am new at planting garlic and planted some in the spring. Should I leave them in to over winter and if not how can I tell when they are ready to pick? Thanks for any help!
Garlic is usually planted in the Fall about 15 October in Zone 5, which I assume you are. Harvest is about July 5 to have good bulbs of about 5 to 8 cloves. I don't know what happens if you plant in the Spring and overwinter. Garlic is probably the easiest plant to grow if done correctly. Here is my experience. http://www.durgan.org/URL/?GarlicS Garlic Summary 2009
Hello Durgan, How close do you plant your garlic? I grow the german rednecks and it seems that the general advice to to plant them a foot away from each other. Sometimes, I cheat and plant them a tad closer. I'm wondering if I put loads of compost and manure, would I be able to plant them even closer to get more garlic. Any thoughts?
I was told the same thing. Six inches apart. I don't know if your garlic variety is any different in spacing requirements. I was told by the grower that I got the bulbs from, not to plant until the end of October. Durgan how deep do you plant the cloves?
Depth is from 3 to 4 inches, sort of depending upon how tight is the soil. Depth is not too critical. The roots should start forming in the Fall, so anytime in October is probably fine. I don't like the new growth shoots to be above ground, when the ground freezes, but even if the shoots do appear, it appears to do no harm.
