Hello, I am in zone 5 Ontario (between Kitchener and Woodstock) and I have a potted fruit question. The peach trees in the farm orchard were doing fine until the past three winters when we had extended periods of -25C winter temps in January. All the flower buds die off and there is a large amount of branch die back. So much for global warming. I am thinking of putting a peach tree into a large container (approx 30-50 gallon) and leave it on the north side of a building until December, move it into an unheated building for January and put it back outside come late February. I want to avoid the the now common winter die back from January extremes. Is this feasible? What is the best sized container (mass wise) to avoid freeze thaw damage to the root zone of a potted fruit tree? What rootstock would be used to dwarf a peach? Thanks, Tom
Not exactly sure about peaches, but you might look here for some help: http://www.homeorchardsociety.org/article/9/
