Hello, My arugula, which I replanted about 6 weeks ago, seems to have stopped growing and is turning red. Any input to why this is happening would be most welcome. Also, is it OK to eat like this? Thank you and regards, Saleve
Any idea what either the scientific or English name of 'arugula' is? Google translator couldn't make anything of it as either a French, German or Italian name.
Michael Arugula (Eruca vesicaria), also known as rocket, garden rocket, rocket salad, rugola, rucola , roquette and rughetta in english but Arugula in US
Garden Rocket is the correct English name: http://ip30.eti.uva.nl/BIS/flora.php?selected=beschrijving&menuentry=soorten&id=2395 I'd guess the growth slowdown is the plant preparing for overwintering, like other autumn-sown crops. It should pick up again fast in the spring.
Saleve, sounds like your arugula is ready for harvest. Most can be harvested in 30 to 45 days. http://www.gardening.cornell.edu/homegardening/scene3693.html http://vegvariety.cce.cornell.edu/m...=2&sortBy=overallrating&order=DESC&searchIn=1 http://www.gardenersnet.com/vegetable/roquette.htm Newt
Thank you to everyone for your replies. I had actually begun to harvest about a week ago (on an as-needed basis) but stopped when it started turning red. Should I just leave it alone now for the winter? And if so, should it be covered? Or should I pick and eat it all now and replant next spring? Thanks again, Saleve
