We planted potatoes for the first time.
As the plants died off on the top, we found the potatoes we dug up have holes in them. Any idea what happened and what to do about it next year should we plant potatoes again? Soil is clayish with lots of leaves thrown on top.

This is wireworm damage. I going to try spreading some wood ashes in the soil this fall. If that fails, I'll look into getting some beneficial insects. Marg

I had this problem last year so this year I tried the wood ashes and planted horseradish around and near in pots so hopefully it wont be invasive and planted them in another part of the garden than before had a reduced amount of these insects. I am also planting a lot of plants that attract beneficial insects and this seems to help reduce the population of the plant eaters but I am far from done. Those horrible squach vine borers have got me on a rant I was so upset I didn~t get any squash this year I can~t afford to get row covers.
