I am just starting out growing an indoor lemon tree (a meyer lemon) and an indoor orange tree. I was just wondering what size pots I should start them out in. They are one year old plants and I don't want to get too small of pots. I was also wondering what is the best type of soil/soil mix to start out with. If anyone has any suggestions I would appriciate it. Thanks.
Choose a container somewhat larger than the root ball, perhaps a 1-2" surrounding space. I've been using 8.5" pots for trees in 1-gal sized pots which I assume are approximately one year old. A porous, fast-draining medium should be used to allow the roots to breath. This will reduce the risk of root rot from over-watering. Ingredients for such a mixture could include bark nuggets, perlite, and peat moss. You could start with regular indoor potting soil which is usually mostly peat and amend as necessary. Some prefer to use chc (coconut husk chips). You may want to search past discussions on this topic in the citrus forum.
Thank you very much. That answers my questions perfectly. I am new to caring for indoor trees so I wanted to start out right. Thanks again!
