Hello everyone. Found these two young trees in northern Saskatchewan on a gravel pile. The forested area nearby has alders, birches and poplars. I am wondering if both of them are a poplar species (which one?) or if the second plant actually a birch.

Both are poplars, quite possibly Quaking Aspen Populus tremuloides root sprouts - the leaves on young stems are less rounded than the leaves on mature plants.

I think that the first one is Balsam Poplar, with shorter leaf stems and a darker green upper leaf surface than the second one, which is likely to be Quaking Aspen, as Michael stated. The leaf shapes also agree with these suggestions.
