My neighbour just had a fairly large (24" diameter) tree cut down. Says it was a poplar. What type. . .?? Anyway it keeps sending suckers up from it's roots - all over the yard - even though the tree is gone. My question is: would it stop producing these suckers if the stump was removed, ground out?
I don't think so. I am having the same problem with a type of robinia. Was refered to as a wisteria tree. This is still happily shooting up all over the yard. I hoe it out or this last year have used roundup on it. I seem to have made headway and have not seen it for a while. Spring will surley see it back again. Liz
With poplars, no, grinding the stump out won't stop root sprouts. Ditto with Robinia. There are some trees where this does work, but not those.
It might have been avoided had the neighbour applied a moderately concentrated Round-Up to the freshly cut stump. It's too late to do that now and the roots will still try and send up sprouts for the next 2-3 years regardless what happens to the stump.
