Ive had this indoor Ponytail palm for over 3 years now. It has been the most beautiful plant in my collection up untill recently. It is in a shallow (about 3 1/2 " deep) ceramic planter and is covered by small rocks and a bit of moss. It's about 20" tall when healthy. Its been in and out of direct sunlight without any ill effects. I water when it needs it, and occasionally submerse planter to absorb through bottom. I gave it a trim, as per my regular routine, maybe a little shorter than I like (this has never been a problem before), and now it seems to be going down hill quickly. It started throwing a bunch of new fronds, quite thin and yellow-green, and now the fronds are completely wilting and browning at the ends. There are only a handful of "healthy" looking green fronds to speek of. I have submersed it and changed it's location in the house to no avail. If it needs to re-potted, can someone direct me as to how this is done? Please Help Me!
You have to get it out of the pot to see how rootbound it is - if roots are starting to circle the ball on the outside, etc. But make sure you have a larger pot and more soil (fast draining with lots of grit in it) on hand before you do anything. If it needs a larger pot, then just get it inside (on a 1-2" layer of new soil) and fill in around the sides (at least 1" wider all around - measure top of old one before shopping) making sure you don't leave gaps - use something to help push the new soil down all around as you fill in, but don't pack it hard, just gently fill in. Do it on a day you'd water anyway, and water well afterward.
