We just purchased a new home in Golden Colorado and in the backyard is a big beautiful ponderosa pine. The problem is some of the branches and limbs are dead. Do I trim back all the dead ones? If so how far back from the last noticeable dead part? Also we plan on raising the area around the tree. Is it alright to cover about a foot of the base of the tree with beauty bark? Thanks

To make and keep your tree as an appealing garden feature:

    Do prune off dead branches.

Don't fill over the root zone or bury the crown.
