I'm thinking more along the lines of Polytrichum, but I can check in April. I happen to remember where this particular patch of moss is located in the garden.
Here is a link to an image of Ceratodon Unfortunately there are no real close-ups of the plants themselves just of the colony. http://images.google.com/imgres?img...um=10&um=1&hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&sa=N The easiest distinction that is observable by sight is the presence of a prolonged "awn" at the tip of each leaf. Ceratodon does not have a prolonged leaf tip.
