I need help identifying this vine. It blooms red in the[SEARCH][/SEARCH] summer and I am allergic to it. I have not had a bad reaction to poison ivy for some time and I was going to clip this one down off of the tree along with the poison ivy when I found that I did have a bad reaction to this vine. I live in the southern region of Illinois in the United States. I searched the internet and thought it may be the trumpet vine but the trumpet vine appears to have waxy leaves and this one doesn't. I also cannot find where it says that the trumpet vine is poisonous. Thanks for your help.

How can you be certain that you had a reaction to this vine and not the poison ivy?
Most people at some point aren't allergic to it, but your immunity changes as you get older.

that is not poison ivy and i don't see any mixed in around the tree with this plant.

i don't know what it is...i have to say that it is possible to have allergic reactions to plants. forsythia bothers me - i get hives if i'm not careful when cutting back the neighbors bush that has grown into my yard.

having a reaction to poison ivy/oak/sumac is not an allergic reaction, per se, it's a matter of your body reacting to the toxins from the plant. and you don't have a reaction until your body has been exposed to it at least once or twice.

although i've never had reaction to poison ivy (and i've been exposed to it quite a few times and very close up, too), i take precautions when i have to deal with it. better safe than sorry :)

Looks like trumpet vine, Campsis radicans, which can cause contact dermatitis.

Thank all of you for your responses! I grew up in a 5 acre woods. No, there is not poison ivy around that tree but there is poison ivy on surrounding trees which I always hatchet out at the root level of the vines.

I know the reaction was not from the poison ivy because, dumb or not, I tested it a second time by going outside and making contact with the vine with two fingers which later that day broke out similar to poison ivy. I treated it with technu which cured it fairly quickly.

I guess the most likely candidate is the trumpet vine but I've never noticed the "fruit" or "bean pods" as seen in the photos on the link that was posted. I will have to post pictures once it blooms. I wonder how rare the reaction to this type of plant is? Thanks again for all of your help.
