Identification: PNW Red-Belted Conk fungus

    Not sure if the specimens shown in the first photo are the same as those in the last three. All were relatively small, perhaps 1 to 3-inches wide, found on Washington State DNR forestland east of Willapa Bay in a naturally regenerated, 100+ year old 2nd growth spruce/hemlock forest.

    Hi @StephenJK

    The first is one of the red belts, Fomitopsis mounceae.

    The others I am not certain: They could be veiled polypores, Cryptoporus volvatus, or young red belts or similar. Easier to tell in person.

    It is a lovely spot! Quite a unique stand of trees with some old relic 6-foot diameter spruce, and probably one or more imperiled plant associations. We are working to try to prevent DNR from cutting it down.
