A friend of mine gave me a seedling from his garden about 5 years ago. I planted it along with another seedling which was caught in the earth ball so i have now 2 plum trees. The two trees have never bloomed, they are very healthy, lots of foliage. Besides the fact they have never bloomed there is something about the trees which does not look right i.e the branches have very short ( 3 to 4 inches) spiky growths . Now I am wondering if I was given root suckers for trees, explaining the fact they have never bloomed and the spiky, strange looking growths. Should I remove them? Thanks,
It is possible that your friend's tree was a grafted tree in which case a tree grown from sucker can be like the one you described, healthy tree but no bloom.
Yes that is what it is ... I called my friend and he confirmed it so I dug out the 2 suckers this last week-end. Thanks for yr reply.
