I inherited this tree 5 years ago when we moved here (it was barely 3') and the previous owner said it was a chestnut, and am wondering if so, what type it is, as this is the first year for a nut (with a smooth surface), and it's now about 5 1/2', and the leaves have some rather ugly blight?

    Yep, Juglans regia (Persian Walnut).

The nuts will be ripe in a month and a half or thereabouts.
