Unfortunately I am not able to load a picture of the tree I am trying to identify, but I thought maybe someone out there can help me. The fruit are green at infancy, and then yellow until ripe when they turn bright red, however, they are spikey throughout their growth. They are small fruit, about the diameter of a quarter. The fruit is soft to the touch, and when broken open have a yellow pulpy center that smells a bit like pumpkin. I was told by the former residents that they thought the fruit was toxic, but had a visitor from Italy that told them the fruit trees were common there and that they ate them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
