Hello, Could one of the tree experts out there please identify the trees and shrubs on this property for me. Very much appreciated !!
I think I can make a few species out but you need to post individual closeups of each kind to get very far with this. Optimum is closeups showing leaves, buds and flowers/fruits plus habit photos. Extreme closeups by themselves of just one part or distant shots showing habit only (like you have now) are often not enough to figure out what is being shown.
Thanks for your reply. Before posting the photos......I tried to zoom in but I couldn't make them clear enough. I will wait for my son to help me and repost. In the meantime......anyone else out there who would take a jab at it?? If I had an idea of what they are, I could then look them up on internet to verify. I purposely left out the region they are in to see if someone could identify without knowing. Any help would be great. Thank you.
Maybe some Populus in the center picture (light-colored bark), and Acer negundo elsewhere. Would need to see a picture with the leaf for any certainty.
I will try to post some closeups very soon. Thanks for the reply. Property is in southeastern Manitoba. I'm not there so unable to get more pictures. Those are all I have. Good Night
Yes, either Acer negundo or Acer tataricum (or Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala) for photographs 1 and 3. Many maples on older farms are Acer tataricum, I've learned (having made the wrong assumption previously that they were Acer negundo). Photo 2 is Populus tremuloides and Quercus macrocarpa. Photo 4, I'd need a close-up shot of the leaves. Which town in southeastern Manitoba? I'm from the area, myself.
Thank you for answering Daniel. I just purchased this property in Gardenton, only a few miles from U.S. border, Provincial Secondary Hwy 209. Straight south of Winnipeg and a little to the east. I will try to get a closeup of these photos later. I'm off to work. Thanks again.
Gardenton's a pretty little village - it's right near the Tolstoi Tallgrass Prairie, which I visited two summers ago.
I have been researching the area on the internet, wildlife, native trees, plants etc and came across some info about the tallgrass prairie and the boreal forest. I am hoping to get there this summer during the Ukrainian Festival at Gardenton to see my property for the first time. I was hoping to I.D. the trees, find out what kind of soil is there and what garden plants most people grow there. I plan to turn this property into a beautiful garden. I can't wait. I will still try to get closeups of the trees posted here. It might be a few days but still hoping someone can help. Thank you again Daniel
Well, you'll be in the exact same zone that I grew up in - it will really depend on how much time you'll be able to spend on the property as to what you will want to plant. For Manitobans, T+T Seeds is an oft-used catalogue - you'll get an idea of what can be grown through there.
Temperatures the past week in southeastern Manitoba have been between -30 and -42 at night (when I occasionally check the "home" online news weeklies)- I believe a few of the communities have set record lows on some days.
