That is what I was thinking after doing some googling. I appreciate your help. I read where it takes over. It is in one of our National Forests here in N.C.. I see deer under it all the time. Thought of planting it for wildlife on my property but am a little hesitant after some reading.
I want to second that on Autumn Olive. Does it grow near your home? In spring Autumn Olive has very fragrant small white flowers. I made a post about the shrubs for berry identification a couple months back if you want to take a look at the pics I posted. http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?p=159119#post159119
Olives have opposite foliage, not alternate. This is definitely an Elaeagnus, almost likely Japanese Silverberry Elaeagnus umbellata.
Back to this problem of common names. Everyone is correct, Autumn olive and Japanese Silverberry are the common names for Elaeagnus umbellata!!!! http://images.google.com/imgres?img...microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7SUNA&sa=N http://www.ppws.vt.edu/scott/weed_id/elgum.htm
