The photograph was taken during early April in Birmingham Alabama. The plant/shrub is approximately 2.5 meters in height. The plant was located adjacent a large rose garden... this may, or may not be relevant. Thanks for your assistance. Brock
The from-the-hip answer is Calycanthus. However, with the more open flower shape and white tips near the center I wonder if it might instead by a hybrid such as 'Hartlage Wine'. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=hartlage+wine&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi May not look quite the same but perhaps another seedling from the cross.
Ron: As always, thanks for th information. I have had the time to follow-up on your impressions; and, I agree with your "Hartlage Wine" assessment. Again, thanks for you help. Brock
It looks different from 'Hartlage Wine' to me but may be a related seedling, if any got dispersed. Need to see fully expanded flowers. You should also look at pictures of other Calycanthus, I didn't check because I thought it looked different - but maybe it doesn't. There is more than one American species grown, with some variation within them.
