    Good morning,

I was thinking about knotweed, however, I cannot convince myself which species when I look at my various books. Any ideas?

Not sure - but out of the European species (several of which are invasive weeds in North America) it looks most like Polygonum persicaria or P. lapathifolium. Unfortunately, I don't know if those two in particular are common out your way, nor do I know what native species you might have, but those two might be worth checking out.
