Okay, I am new at this so here goes. This mushroom was found mostly buried in wood shavings. It has a very short stalk and is a buff coloured potatoe shape. When broken it has black coloured spongy interior. It has pleasant mushroomy odor and when I spotted it I immediately thought of truffle, but I don't believe it is. I apolgize for the pic, I have a crappy camera.

    Thanks

    Rob

    Thanx for the new post...
Definately not a real truffle. This fits more into the 'false puffball' category instead. With the thick skin, dark powdery insides....I'd go with an earthball for sure. Can't really tell any details at all though, with the photos.
A huge note there though? NOT EDIBLE. AT ALL.

Hi C. Wick, forgot to mention, this is not a puffball at all. No relation. The spongy interior is quite firm and cellular, not fluffy like a puffball. I know my puffbals as I have eaten many of them. This mushroom is natually black. If a puffball is black it is poisonous, otherwise puffballs are good to eat.

I concur with Frog on the Scleroderma notion.

You guys nailed it. Sceroderma geaster is the culprit.

    Thank-you
