please help

    I photographed this flower in New Mexico near ShipRock in late May. This wasn't in a garden but out in the scrubby pasture lands on the Navajo reservation. Haven't been able to find it in any feild guides it looks like it ought to belong to the lily family except for wrong number of petals. P5220273.jpg

    Lygodesmia arizonica. Synonym: Lygodesmia grandiflora variety arizonica. (Rushpink)

    Semi-desert. Sandy openings and woodlands. Spring.

    I'm thinking something in the family Caryophyllaceae. Note five petals, not six, so not a monocot (and therefore also not Brodiaea).

    I see five dentes on tips of the petals, -- a feature common to Compositae...
