I photographed this flower in New Mexico near ShipRock in late May. This wasn't in a garden but out in the scrubby pasture lands on the Navajo reservation. Haven't been able to find it in any feild guides it looks like it ought to belong to the lily family except for wrong number of petals. Lygodesmia arizonica. Synonym: Lygodesmia grandiflora variety arizonica. (Rushpink) Semi-desert. Sandy openings and woodlands. Spring.
I'm thinking something in the family Caryophyllaceae. Note five petals, not six, so not a monocot (and therefore also not Brodiaea).
That looks to be it; L. grandiflora var. arizonica looks particularly close from google pics. http://www.nps.gov/arch/naturescience/bluepurple.htm http://www.swcoloradowildflowers.com/Pink Enlarged Photo Pages/lygodesmia.htm
