These weeds have very deep roots and have been growing in several of our six organic garden beds. We used compost, peat moss and vermiculite to fill our beds, so these must have blown in somehow. They grow tall and have a thick stalk that is purplish at the base. Shorter, narrow leaves grow from the base. At the top is a flower of some sort that reminds me of wheat. What are they?

    Perhaps one of Echinochloa species.

Or possibly a Phalaris, although I'm not much of a grass expert.
