    Hi,

This plant just started to bloom with a strong smell.

Any idea what it could be??

'Fragrans', indeed! If it smells anything like the Dracaena marginata that bloomed for me a few years ago...WHEW!!!
Your plant looks as though it could use a repotting.

My sister had cut her dracaenas flower stalks off and throw them out (outside) because the scent was soooooo strong!

Read that the fruit of the D. m. was eaten by Raphus cucullatus on the island of Mauritius. Hmm. The bird is now extinct. Could there be a connection here?---I had my plant at the library where I work...for some time we staff searched for the used diaper we were sure had been concealed somewhere. Talk about a modified rapture! On one hand, I was thrilled that the plant I had raised from a pup had BLOOMED for me...on the other, I was kinda embarrassed. "Uh, sorry! It's just my Dracaena!" Way to get that ol' merit raise!

I have mine outside and when they bloom they do smell sweet to me anyway. maybe because it is outside and diluted it is not as strong as inside in one room I guess!

The scent wasn't "bad" my sister told me, that it was just so strong and just couldn't take it any longer, lol. Then again, scent is in the nose of beholder!

Very true. My son just LOVES the aroma of gasoline, and I once met a lady who had a similar passion for the smell of bleach. Go figure. And maybe D. fragrans is aptly named---it's just marginata that stinks to high heaven.
