What plant is this and why are there random dead spots/patches on some of the leaves? Thanks so much in advance!

It's Epipremnum aureum, aka pothos. By dead spots I will assume you are not talking about the natural variegation of white or ivory areas on the leaves. The two brown dead areas I see are most likely from random injury. The one on the edge of the leaf's white area could have simply been a crease or a bump that caused the immediate tissue to die. The one that is curling throught that one leaf is probably also random mechanical injury, possibly when the new leaf was still furled. If these areas stay the same, there is no need to do anything to them. If they bother you, trim off the leaves in question, close to the vining stem.
