thanks guys. i've been wondering what kind of plants i had. its fun to know. thanks again whats the deal w/ my coffee plant?? will it flower and give me coffee beans? i bought it because it looked kinda funky, now that i know its a coffee plant, i'm curous what this plant might yield to me?
now that i know what i have, this new hobby (green thumb) is more fun and exciting. anyone have any input on special care or attention i should pay to any of these. they are all mostly in front of the same window getting about 3 to 4 hours of direct sunlight and the rest of the time just getting indirect light. i do know that some plants love the direct light while others don't seem to like it much. thanks in advance for your help, and for you past help with the identifing stage. peace guys
Aha! Number 10 is an aspidistra! spathyphyllum of course, though I don't remember the exact name! Used to be very popular - called "cast-iron plant" because it would grow in very poorly lit Victorian drawing rooms. Haven't seen in years!
Aspidistra (cast iron plant) and Spathyphyllum (peace lily) are two different plants. I agree with #10 being a Spathyphyllum.
From above: "Aspidistra (cast iron plant) and Spathyphyllum (peace lily) are two different plants. I agree with #10 being a Spathyphyllum." I'm more inclined toward "Aspidistra eleator" for No. 10 but, I can never really tell them apart from pictures. Does anyone know some guidlines for telling them apart. barb
Have a close look at the veins. Spathiphyllum look like this..... http://images.google.com/imgres?img...gb:IE-ContextMenu&rlz=1I7SUNA_en-GB&sa=G&um=1 Aspidistra elatior look very different.... http://www.ruskingardens.com/hplants/Aspidistra_elatior-_0004.JPG Hope that helps.
Sure does SS, so Aspidistra is a monoct leaf and the Spath is a dicot. Would that be a true statement? At least that's one botanical concept I understand, not many more. ;))) barb
Both monocots it seems. Aspidistra (unranked): Monocots Order: Asparagales Family: Ruscaceae Genus: Aspidistra Ker Gawl. Spathiphyllum (unranked): Monocots Order: Alismatales Family: Araceae Subfamily: Monsteroideae Tribe: Spathiphylleae Genus: Spathiphyllum Schott
Here are both plant leaves side by side. Left, Spathiphyllum, Right, Aspidistra. Leaf shape, color, size and stems are also different.
Thanks Salt Cedar or should I say - Tamarix aphylla, T. chinensis, T. gallica, T. parviflora, and T. ramosissima. Which one are you? I guess I am more of a visual learner, but thanks for the family tree. Bluewing's pic's are more understandable to this mostly untrained person. ;))) barb
