Hello, I am new to this board, so I hope I get this all right. I have a plant/ bush in my front yard, next to the water, that has bloomed - most have died, but one is still in full bloom - and very pretty. Can anyone help me with and identification? thanks, Saya
WOW! You all are good! Thanks for the ID - I did some surfing and I agree that it has to be a hibiscus militaris. Now, there are loads of seeds - can I cultivate them? How? how close to water do they need to be? Would 10-15' away be close enough? So this is a wild plant? Is it a flower or bush? Or both? thanks again, Saya
Save the seeds and sow (indoors) in Spring four to six weeks before your last frost date. Plant into the garden and water regularly. They will grow in wetlands but if given adequate irrigation can grow anywhere. It would be a root hardy perrenial in most areas. HTH Chris
Thanks Chris, Do the hibiscus militaris seeds need to be stored in any special way? Would a zip lock baggie do the trick? the pods are bursting w/ seeds right now - I suspect that means that they are ready for harvesting - correct? Saya PS As you can probably tell - I am a total novice at this! I do appreciate your input!!
Saya, I would not use a zip lock, locked. When I've done this with seeds in the past they mold. I use little, brown, approx 3.5 X 2.5, paper envelopes to store seeds. Maybe someone else out there has more info than I.
