Platanus fruits

    I believe the attached to be Platanus racemosa - as you can see, the fruits look fused together. Has anyone seen this and do you know if its viral (or other) or genetic?

    This looks like Liquidambar styraciflua to me. I see fruits fused like this a lot on these trees, have no idea why.
