planting under apples trees

Discussion in 'Fruit and Nut Trees' started by Unregistered, Apr 18, 2005.

  1. I am hoping to plant an dwarf apple tree in the middel of my informal veggie/flower bed. Can I plant under apples trees? If so how far away from the trunk should I plant. Are there any plant (annual or perennial) that should never be planted under an apple tree?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hmm... I never really thought about it. I would imagine you would have to be careful that the plants get enough sunlight after the tree is big, and also not to disturb the roots.

I will ask around and let you know if I come up with anything else.

There are many plants which will do well around apples tree's and help the tree out as well. Any umbelifferous plants would be good. They are the choice nesting locale for parasitic wasps which are quite beneficial. Also comfrey around the drip line will bring nutrients up from the subsoil and enrich the soil around the tree. You have to be careful with the comfrey that you get a type which isn't spread by seed, and never to chops its roots since every bit of chopped root becomes a new plant.

  4. Thanks for the information, however what is a "umbelifferous" plant?
