Radish http://www.durgan.org/URL/?Radish 16 April 2009 Planting Radish Seed The "Valentine" radish seed from Stokes Seeds was planted today. The seed was carefully spaced on toilet paper to maintain depth and to insure proper spacing, thus eliminating thinning after sprouting. Some wood ash was applied to the row in an attempt to inhibit damage by flea beetles. It may not work but at least I tried.
Durgan, what is up with these radish seeds being blue? I have only experienced the normal seed color. Also, you were so patient to place these seeds so perfectly spaced being that normal seeding process for these are spread and thin.
Seeds are coated, apparently, with a fungicide. Either one does the spacing at planting, or has to spend the time thinning later. The method is still under evaluation. If I get a large number of perfect radish, then I will accept the method.

Isn't it too early for flea beetles? I didn't have any problem with the radishes that I planted early in the year last year. Later in the year, they just destroyed my cauliflower and broccoli plants that I planted mid-summer for a fall crop. This year I bought some floating row cover and I plan to cover all of my cole crops.
Durgan, seeing the young radish leaves well seperated now supports the ease of doing it your method, and allowing the radish to grow undisturbed. I do like this (patient) seeding method.
I bought material for row covers from Dam Seeds. It should be interesting to try it. I also got some Tree Tanglefoot sticky stuff, which will be applied to stakes around the plants in an attempt ot trap flea beetles and the cabbage moth. These two insects do a lot of damage.
