I have two beautifull windmill palms that have been in pots for about 6 years. I am afraid they are getting root bound in their pots they are already in the biggest pots I can find. I guess it is time to put them in the ground. I live in langley, B.C. and I want to do this right so they survive. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks in advance!
Plant these in a fairly sunny spot, pretty much anything but full shade should do. Western or southern exposure is good since once in a while in winter you'll get those bitter Fraser Valley Arctic out flow winds. A hand full of bone meal stirred in the planting hole will help set new roots. One thing I can never stress enough, plant them with adaquate space in the spot they will grow for the rest of their lives. This is about 8' to 10' diameter. Too many people plant them in confined areas (too close to the house etc) or with overhead obstructions (eaves, power lines etc). All too often people post here about "how to move a Windmill palm". I've had countless phone calls on the problems and seen many more in problem areas. Beyond that, plant at the same depth and don't heap soil up over the trunk. Plant in an area that won't flood or hold standing water. Keep them reasonably well watered the first year or two during warmer weather. You'll get many years of enjoyment from these palms. Cheers, LPN.
