I give up! Between the Moles, Voles and/or Rats tunneling everywhere plants and my Daughters Roses are dieing. The rockery is riddled with tunnels. I gues we are going to have to remove all the plants and back fill behind the rocks. (Maybe cement?)

Is it feasible to build boxes like raised planters but sink them into the ground. They would be lined, bottom and sides with screening of some sort. My question is: What kind of wood, what size ie 2X10? And what kind of screening. Any sugestions on the rockery? :((( barb

This and the deer question nearby in the Forum's list re how to grow tree transplants in Wales with deer around, plus the problem in semi-rural, suburban Saanich here on Vancouver Island with deer [and no one able to come up with a hunting/culling scheme], makes me realize that decent gardens can only be grown in the city in many cases -- I see urban gardens, delightful ones, in Victoria closer to downtown, but out here in the suburbs... mostly all green, with the odd spot of colour this time of year in determinedly fenced or sprayed yards only... It is so discouraging. Gardeners around here should only acquire homes in the central city it seems, unless they are prepared to install fences, as of course some Saanich property-owners have. Our particular suburb does not permit tall fencing around properties, it is by legal agreement supposed to have open vistas sheltered by trees and shrubbery only... and only a few homes have braved the rules or have put up cedar fencing around private patios, very small areas where the deer can't intrude... There has been a lot of anti-gun and anti-hunting-in-suburbia opinion-making in this region and it will be interesting to see what happens with this burgeoning population of deer, although other gun-related issues are well under control...
