My dad was out working in the field today and brought home this interesting plant for me. After spending about an hour randomly googling things (I'm more of a mammal person), I decided to post here and see if you guys can help me out! It was found in northeast Ohio and was not part of a tree or shrub.. Just growing out of the ground as is! Here are some images http://www.freewebs.com/poprocks09/001.JPG http://www.freewebs.com/poprocks09/002.JPG http://www.freewebs.com/poprocks09/003.JPG
Looks like an Arisaema sp. Possibly Arisaema triphyllum. http://images.google.com/images?q=a...1I7SUNA_en-GB&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arisaema_triphyllum http://plants.usda.gov/java/county?state_name=Ohio&statefips=39&symbol=ARTR
Ah. I did come across this while I was searching, but I wasn't sure because of the absence of the curled blossom. Is that where the red fruits are now?
Hmmm!!!. Earlier in the year these plants produce a thing that looks like a sort of pointed and curled cowl. ( This is called the spathe) Inside this are the working parts of the plant... the male and female bits. Insects crawl in and pollinate the plant. Once fertilised the spathe withers away, revealing a stalk with the seeds / red berries... as your pic shows. http://images.google.com/imgres?img...earchBox&rlz=1I7SUNA_en-GB&sa=N&start=20&um=1 Hope this helps.
