We see these growing often around southern Ohio. I always called them "horsetails", but now have my doubts. They are about 1 meter tall, almost smooth (or very short haired) stems and the leaves are very much like grass, rough. I have pulled them out of our garden before. These are growing in a park in sun along the woodland border.

    anybody know what they are?

It would be embarrassing if it is... we are trying to get better at identifying plants when they are not flowering, and that is one I thought we knew well, but only when it is flowering...

Plants like this asked about on the internet often turn out to be Conyza.

OK - fortunately these plants are in a park within easy walking distance of our house. We go there often, so when the plants start to flower I will try to identify them. Hopefully both species are present so I can compare them side by side, find some unique characteristics that make them easier to distinguish. I will report back...
