Hello, I bought this tree/plant from IKEA and had it indoors (Chicago) for most of the year but due to a lack of sunlight I put it on the balcony as soon as the weather got a bit nicer....I need some help trying to identify this tree so I can get recommendations on how to care for it. Also I have a black disease on the ends of the branches that seems to be spreading. It is wilting the leaves and turning black.

    Can anyone help me?

Trying to be green in Bucktown (Chicago, IL)

    Thanx

    Mike

It might be Cinnamomum zeylanicum or related species.

yes it looks like a canella tree, they are similer to the cinnamon tree, they like to be kept in low to medium light, always kept moist and they don't like to be too root bound. they will flower with small white flowers,in small clusters .

I seem to remember this question of names coming up before somewhere. Canela is the Spanish common name for Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), a different tree from the botanical genus Canella.

Thanks all for your help and time defining my tree.....I seem to agree that it is a canella winterana based off of the pics from the other thread. The tree is actually not doing so well...it is trying to grow but I have a nasty black disease that is eating away the branches from the outside in and am afraid is killing my plant. I have tried many types of fungicides but nothing seems to help. Any suggestions?

James, you seem to be coming to the same wrong conclusion as the original poster in the other thread. Despite all attempts at clarification she seemed to end up believing she had Canella (botanical name). The leaves of the plant in this post have three major longitudinal veins, so it cannot be Canella -- but it may be "canela"!
