Need help in identifying this plant. Local garden center can not identify plant. The plant in the photo grows like a ground cover in a woodland garden and is in bloom now -- end of April -- in NY state. The bloom is about an inch across, pale yellow with a deeper yellow center.

Another possibility is Lesser Celandine or Pilewort, Ranunculus ficaria, probably considered invasive in your state.

Marsh Marigold leaves look very similar to, but are larger than, Lesser Celandine and normally have more distinctly toothed margins than shown in the photograph.

One of the people in our group looked at marsh marigold in a local garden and decided it is also a much bigger plant than the one we have. Thanks.

Just heard that local horticultural people have concurred that the plant is Lesser Celandine. Thanks for the help!
