Plant search engine

Discussion in 'Conversations Forum' started by Ozzy, Oct 10, 2007.

  1. Hello,

I have created a search engine to find plants that are for sale at nurseries.

    The address is: http://www.planthunteronline.com

Could you please have a look at it and give me some feedback.
Are there things that are lacking to you opinion?
    Please let me know.

    Kind regards,
    Oscar

Well, the first thing I notice is that the start page that appears at the link provided here has no information about the geographical (or other) parameters of the database. With the high numbers of plants being offered usually such tools have to bite off a regional chunk and just deal with that, for example the RHS Plant Finder covering UK only or THE PLANT LOCATOR - WESTERN REGION (a printed publication) western North America only.

After that I clicked on Browse Plants and saw a very limited range of plants with spelling mistakes (such as "balsaminea") and redundant listings based on variations in capitalization (mosanensis, Mosanensis).

If you wish to develop an important tool it will probably have to end up looking (and being) like something on the order of the above-mentioned resources.
