Cupaniopsis anacardioides perhaps? http://www.issg.org/database/species/images/ecology/starr_031108_2150_cupaniopsis_anacardioides.jpg http://www.invasive.org/images/768x512/1461064.jpg
Thanks Saltcedar, but mine looks more like a tree than a weed. the leaves are of a darker green too and they are quite hard and glossy (a bit like the aspect of holly leaves). Any other idea?
I'm confused Carrotwood (Cupaniopsis anacardioides)is a tree? http://www.hear.org/pier/imagepages/singles/starr_031204_0002_cupaniopsis_anacardioides.htm http://plants.ifas.ufl.edu/node/115
ok i see, carrotwood is indeed a tree. I think it might be related but no the same. My plant grows a much thicker trunk from the start. It really looks almost like a bonsai. Thanks for that anyway. I will try and check all carrotwood related trees. Cheers, D.
Cupaniopsis anacardioides is a small tree; grows to 8-10m tall. Note that the correct English name is Tuckeroo.
It could be; plants with pinnate leaves very often have far fewer leaflets on the first leaves they produce. Lychee (Litchi chinensis, fairly closely related to Tuckeroo) seedlings also have leaves with just two leaflets compared to 6-8 leaflets on adult plants. The leaflet shape on yours is a fairly good match for Tuckeroo. I suspect though you may need to wait a few years to get adult foliage (and maybe also flowers/fruit) before you can get a definite identification.
thanks for your replies saltcedar and Michael F. It is now winter here in Ireland and my plants are dormant, but I will post new photographs when the plants start growing again in the spring. again, thank you very much for your expertise! D.
